It is not a requirement that staff maintains a social media presence, but we actively encourage it for our staff as it is highly useful to disseminate our work, share ideas and to be a part of the discussion that takes place globally.
Social media platforms of all kinds, including social networks, review sites, sharing and discussion sites, photographic social networks, Q&A social networks and professional social networks, are powerful tools that can change quickly. Everyone is encouraged to think of new ways to use it and to share those ideas with colleagues.
The Global Initiative has produced useful guidance about key messages that is available for all staff and many colleagues experienced in using social media effectively are happy to provide help and support in this area.
Staff are able to access social media services and social networking websites at work, either through our IT systems or via their own personal equipment. However, staff using social media should do so in a way that enhances the Global Initiative’s prospects.
Please be aware that:
- A misjudged status update can generate complaints or damage the Global Initiative’s reputation, whether the update is made about personal issues or about Global Initiative’s or its work.
- There are security and data protection issues to consider.
- New social media accounts in the Global Initiative’s name must not be created unless approved by the Director or Deputy Director.
- Only people who have been authorized to use any social networking accounts in Global Initiative’s name may do so.
- When sharing interesting content, it is important to always review the content thoroughly and never post a link based on the headline.
- A personal social media account should make it clear that the account does not represent Global Initiative’s views or opinions. You may wish to include a disclaimer such as “The views expressed are my own and do not reflect the views of the Global Initiative”.
- Material or content that is offensive or harassing to others, inappropriate, defamatory or incur liability for the company should never be posted or sent on social media. Inappropriate content or material includes: pornography, racial or religious slurs, gender-specific comments, information encouraging criminal skills or terrorism, or materials relating to cults, gambling and illegal drugs. Any text, images or other media that could reasonably offend someone on the basis of race, age, sex, religious or political beliefs, national origin, disability, sexual orientation, or any other protected characteristics would also be considered inappropriate content.
- Spam, junk email, or chain emails and messages should never be posted, uploaded, forwarded or linked to.
- Copyright rules and regulations apply to material published on social media and should be adhered to.
- Phishing attempts, where scammers may attempt to use deception to obtain information relating to either Global Initiative or its partners, should be watched out for.
- Suspicious links should equally be avoided and not clicked.
Anyone who knowingly uses social media in a way that would cause harm to the Global Initiative will be subject to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment. Employees, contractors and other users may also be held personally liable, and where appropriate, the Global Initiative will involve the police or other law enforcement agencies.
